The use of natives is growing in popularity, especially in the home garden. They’re durable, often beautiful and are essential to the web of life outside our doors.

Join us at The Growing Place in Naperville on Saturday, April 22 for a series of talks to increase your awareness of Illinois’s native plant species and learn how to use them in your landscape.

11:00am: Natives for Home Gardens: Here’s How to Do It   Kyle Lambert, Perennials Manager at The Growing Place

Do you want to add natives to your yard but are afraid it’ll turn into a weedy mess? Fear no more! Join our Perennials Manager, Kyle Lambert, as he talks about the realities of adding natives to your yard. Whether you’re starting a native garden from scratch or simply adding a few to an existing landscape, there’s something new to learn:

  • Choosing natives that behave well in home landscapes. And what happens when they don’t.
  • Matching the right plants with the right site conditions.
  • Planting for ornamental appeal.
  • Substituting natives for non-natives.

12:00pm: Attracting Hummingbirds to Your Garden    Donna Kubik, DuPage Birding Club

Donna Kubik, from the DuPage Birding Club, will discuss bird pollinators of the world, with an emphasis on the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, the amazing pollinator who visits our neighborhoods from April through October. Learn how to attract hummingbirds with native plants in your garden! DuPage Birding Club members will also be present to answer your questions about birds and about the club.

1:00pm: Using Natives to Solve Problems in the Home Landscape

Did you know that natives can help solve common problems in the home landscape? It’s true. Learn the role natives can play in resolving landscape issues and how to use them in your yard.
