Each year we get excited about new varieties available in the plant world. Here are a few of the ones you’ll see at The Growing Place this spring. Opening day is just around the corner on March 27. We look forward to helping you choose which plants are right for your place.

Annuals

Shock Wave® Purple Tie Dye Spreading Petunia
Petunia x hybrid

Depending on temperature and light, the masses of petite, high-impact blooms will turn different shades of purple-blue and white bicolor. Cold and drought tolerant, Petunias are easy care pollinator plants when given average, well drained soil in full sun to part shade. Plant in beds, hanging baskets, containers, and borders. They will grow with a spreading habit, 6”-12” H by 2’-3’ W.

Sol™ Lizzard Leaf Celosia
Celosia argentea

This eye-catching curled foliage plant turns a vibrant burgundy-red in high light.  ‘Sol Lizzard Leaf’ will make an excellent filler in containers combined with other plants. It would also be attractive along borders, adding a different color and texture. Plant in average, well drained soil in full sun to part shade. Grows 10”-14” H by 12”-18” W.

Mangave hybrid ‘Praying Hands’
MAD ABOUT MANGAVE® Collection

A succulent that looks like an artichoke. How cool is that? Dark blue-green leaves stay curled upward like a teardrop, while the cinnamon brown terminal spines nearly touch each other. Plant this easy care hybrid in dry, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Mangave can also be loved indoors as houseplants. Grows 6”-12” H by 6”-12” W in a pyramidal shape.

Perennials

Lavender Bubbles Ornamental Onion
Allium ‘Lavendar Bubbles’

Orbs of dark purple flowers are a pollinator magnet. ‘Lavender Bubbles’ has curled foliage, blooms mid to late summer and has darker flowers than ‘Millineum.’ Consider planting different Allium selections together for a longer bloom season. Drought tolerant Allium likes full sun to part shade in average soil. Being in the onion family, deer and rabbits tend to leave Allium alone. Grows 10”-14” H by 18”-24” W.

EYE-CATCHER™ Coral Craze Coneflower
Echinacea EYE-CATCHER™ ‘Coral Craze’ PPAF Collection

Coral pink 5” flowers mature to lavender-pink, catching the eye with their contrasting nearly black cones and stems. Blooming mid-summer, attracting birds and butterflies, ‘Coral Craze’ will intermittently rebloom. Deer resistant and good for cut flower arrangements. Drought tolerant when planted in average, well drained soil in full sun to part shade. Grows 24”-30” H by 18”-36” W.

Tuscan Gold™ False Sunflower
Heliopsis helianthoides ‘Inhelsodor’

Who can resist bright, golden yellow flowers blooming early through late summer? The Proven Winner daisy-like flowers have orange-gold centers and would make beautiful cut arrangements. Deer and rabbits will leave them alone while the birds and butterflies flit and flutter. Planted in average soil in full sun, Tuscan Gold grows 2’-3’ H by 18”-24” W.

Trees & Shrubs

Fire Light Tidbit™ Hydrangea
Hydrangea paniculata ‘SMNPK’

A new development brings the tiniest, tidiest panicle hydrangea yet! The perfect addition to flower gardens and small spaces, the big, lush, white mophead flowers appear early-mid summer and develop bright pink and red tones as summer progresses. This easy-care beauty keeps its color to the first frost. Leave some flowers on the plant for winter interest, and use others in cut or dried arrangements. Plant in average soil in full sun to part shade. Grows 2’-3’ H by 2’-3’ W.

Winecraft Gold® Smokebush
Cotinus coggygria ‘MINCOJAU3’

Round, waxy leaves emerge sunny orange, changing to a golden hue before maturing to a cheerful chartreuse. In early summer, cloud-like green flower clusters turn into pink ‘smoke’ plumes, covering the plant. Plant in average, well drained soil where it will add a spot of bright color in full sun. This deer resistant Proven Winner also provides great fall color. With its small, comp[act size, Winecraft Gold® is a versatile addition to any landscaping. Grows 4’-6’ H by 4’-6’ W.

Lindsey’s Skyward™ Baldcypress
Taxodium distichum ‘Skyward’

A shorter, narrow form of Baldcypress is now available to give height to smaller landscapes. Lindsey’s Skyward™ has dense, soft, rich green leaves that turn a cinnamon bronze for fall color. This wet tolerant Baldcypress has a fast growth rate when planted in average soil and full sun. Grows 20’-25’ H by 8’-10’W.
